Course evaluations

The College of Global Futures conducts end-of-the-semester evaluations for all SFIS, SCAS and SOS courses, which includes evaluating teaching assistants.

For higher response rates, below is what other instructors do to get many of their students to complete course evaluations:

  1. In the course syllabus, include a few sentences about the importance of course evaluations. Explain how you use the course evaluations to reflect on your teaching and to make adjustments in your courses. By completing the course evaluations, students are participating in running the university.
  2. At various points during the term, remind students how much you value the feedback that they will be providing in the course evaluations. Let students know about specific changes that you have made because of feedback from students in previous semesters. If there are cases in which you could not make a change, explain why.
  3. Relate course evaluations to what students will experience in their own careers. That is, they will receive regular evaluations that will help them develop professionally.
  4. Gather other kinds of feedback from students during the semester so that they can see that you use self-evaluation as part of your teaching routine. (See Classroom Assessment Techniques: A Handbook for College Teachers for 50 practical strategies.)
  5. Show students that you care about their learning. They will reciprocate.
  6. Assure students that their identities are kept confidential and that you will not see their feedback until grades have been posted.
  7. On the Canvas course, post announcements about the dates for completing course evaluations.
  8. During the last week of the term, give students time to complete the course evaluations online in class. Fifteen minutes will do the job. Announce the date so that students know that they should bring laptops, tablets, or smartphones to class on that date.
  9. Talk about skewed data. Explain that you need feedback from all of your students, not just those who are least or most satisfied with the course.
  10. Use a playful competitive approach. The course evaluation tool indicates what percentage of students has completed the surveys. If the current response rate is 81%, challenge students to increase that rate—perhaps as a contest between them and students in another section that you are teaching. As a convenience to faculty, ASU’s digital course evaluation system allows instructors to receive feedback as soon as course grades are posted at the end of the term, and the data are archived online for easy indefinite access.
