ASU Care to the Core University Sustainability Practices

Getting involved

For ASU to drive sustainable impact, collaboration and active involvement from individuals are essential. Through ASU groups like University Sustainability Practices (USP), the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory and the College of Global Futures, opportunities are available for students, faculty and staff to contribute.

University Sustainability Practices Opportunities

Subscribe to ASU’s biannual Campus Sustainability Newsletter to stay up to date on ASU’s sustainability efforts and learn more about how to get involved.

Eco Reps Program

Eco Reps provides on-campus residential students with the opportunity to lead sustainable practices, educate peers and drive change at ASU. The program hires students residing on the Tempe campus. Students earn a stipend, build leadership skills and balance a flexible 5-hour weekly commitment. Students are hired each summer for the upcoming academic year.

Sustainability professional development

USP offers a number of training sessions for ASU students, faculty and staff ranging from their Green Devil Guidebook to their Seeds of Sustainability and Climate Resilience training.

Sustainability Recognition Program

ASU’s Sustainability Recognition Program provides opportunities to be recognized for individual and team contributions to ASU’s sustainability goals. Participants can enroll in lifestyle, student organization or event recognition. Participants will review the training materials for each enrolled area and complete a pledge.

Sustainability Initiatives Revolving Fund

The Arizona State University Sustainability Initiatives Revolving Fund (SIRF) was established in fiscal year 2012 to invest in projects that foster and enable sustainability efforts and provide an economic return on investment.

Sustainability tours

Discover and explore some of ASU’s exciting sustainability initiatives and projects by following this 1.2-mile walking tour of the Tempe campus. A virtual tour of the Walton Center for Planetary Health is also available.

Events

Campus sustainability events hosted by University Practices throughout the year to celebrate and raise awareness about the value of sustainability in higher education.

The Garden Commons

The Garden Commons is ASU’s community garden space located at the Polytechnic campus to empower students to become “change agents” to support sustainable food systems and rethink how we access, cultivate and value food.

Ditch the dumpster

Ditch the Dumpster is ASU’s annual move-out sustainability program that helps students in residence halls recycle, reuse or donate unwanted items instead of sending them to the landfill. By diverting waste and supporting local charities, the program promotes sustainable habits while giving back to the community.

Residential Compost Program

Help reduce waste at ASU by composting food scraps and compostable paper. If you live in Adelphi, Barrett, Villas at Vista, Vista del Sol, Greek Leadership Village, or University Towers, you can participate in the composting program. Keep organic waste out of landfills and support a more sustainable campus.

Waste Sorting Events

Ever wonder what happens after you toss something in the recycling bin? Join a Blue Bag Sorting Event to get hands-on experience sorting recyclables and learning how waste is processed. Meet fellow sustainability advocates, discover reusable alternatives to common items and make an impact on campus waste reduction.

Waste Directory

Not sure where to toss that empty coffee cup or old batteries? Use ASU’s Waste Directory to quickly find out how to properly dispose of, recycle, or repurpose everyday items. Just search for an item, and the tool will tell you what bin to use and where to find it on campus!
